I found an old elm log buried under a pile of decaying branches and leaves. It had probably been lying there for 3 or 4 years. I dragged it home with the pickup truck, hoping it would be salvageable for firewood. When I started sawing blocks to split, I noticed some very unusual grain discoloration, so I rescued them from the woodstove and started carving on them. I don't know if I'll ever again find such an unusual and pronounced grain pattern in an elm log.
