This carving started out as a large elm block that had an unsplittable crotch in it. Elm is very stringy and difficult to split. Twisty elm is impossible to split with an ax. So I decided to carve it instead. The crotch created a very interesting feathered grain at the top of the arch. I didn't bend the wood, but rather carved it into a ribbon-like shape.
